Per capita, crime in New Zealand is amongst the highest in the world. Many people fall for the 'low crime rate' hype put out by the NZ government and tourism companies. Consequently a lot of people let down their guard when visiting the country and get taken advantage of as a result. It's shameful really.

Thank you for highlighting this issue, the more people that talk about it the better

I am starting BLOGAID for the next flight! All the children will be full fair after October. The first fundraising exercise is to take place on 1st April. I will be blowing a baked bean through a red and white stripy straw from Kaitaia to Dunedin.

There is a lot to be said for a strong family. When someone dies in an already physically and somewhat emotionally divided one, the cracks are all the more gigantic.
You are right Lois, it was both cathartic and heartbreaking.
At the root of it was, I think, that it was terribly hard for 'younger sister' to have been nursing Mum one minute and watching her brothers filling skips less than a week later.

Let's hope they all are grown up enough to remember their families when they return to their various parts of the world and to think of their children who all need cousins.

I thank goodness, in some ways, that I was an only child :D

I'm sorry your trip and return to your other home had such mixed consequences: it sounds alternately cathartic and rather heartbreaking.

Grief can bring out the worst, as well as the best, in families. It's a shame some of your rellies can't remember that everyone has their own way of dealing with it, and also that the practicalities of living 1000's of miles away have to be taken into account.

No we landed in Kiwiland at 5am today. Lots of mixed emotions flying around together with chronic jet-lag, back to school-itis and copious amounts of M&S underwear for which we need to find a home :D
